MY REVIEW

HELD by Kimberly A Bettes

First of all, before you continue reading, I want to say that I do not condone any kind of violent act made toward any other living being. Nor do I think that rape is permittable in any situation at all.

Oh…My…God.

I don’t remember the last time I read something this dark and twisted…It was amazing!

Again this was a book I found on a list of Taboo Books on Goodreads. I loved the cover and one-clicked it. I know, you should never judge a book by its cover, but in this case, it was a good call.

It started out kind of quirky, the female MC was almost sassy towards her kidnapper and I wondered if this was going to be a funny kind of abduction novel.

NOPE!

Be warned. THIS SHIT IS DARK!

And it is not in any way sexy. Nothing erotic at all. Ok, with the warning out the way I’ll proceed.

NICOLE

  • I found this character to be very well written. Her thoughts and feelings were what I would imagine a real reaction to this kind of situation would be.

She’s been kidnapped and for the first few chapters, she (and I) thought he was pretty much an extremely weird man, but not really abusive.

WRONG! (again)

She quickly reassesses her opinion after witnessing his treatment of another woman he had hidden away when she tried to escape.

It was brutal and sickening and when he was done beating her and dragged her down to his basement, he carried on with their conversation as if nothing had happened.

From this point on I had an anxious knot in my stomach.

The only reason she wasn’t being treated the same way as the other poor woman is because he liked her sassiness. But now she has to figure out how to remain outspoken without going too far, because when he gets angry at her…bad things happen.

RON

  • This is the kind of guy that haunts my darkest nightmares. He seems charming and kind. Intelligent and caring. Quite the catch. Until he gets you home.

I don’t know how many mental illnesses he has but I know there are a few and they are extreme.

He kidnaps, tortures and rapes women, all because he wants to study their reactions and how far the human body and mind can be pushed before they break. He wants to write a “realistic” novel.

The things he does to these women, I can’t even.

Ron is a sick puppy y’all.

I’m going to show you a couple of scenes so that you know what you are getting into before you read it.

DO NOT READ THE FOLLOWING (or indeed this book) IF YOU ARE SQUEAMISH OR SENSITIVE TO EXTREME VIOLENCE AND FICTIONAL NON-CON SEX.

Just when I thought I couldn’t stand to hear her scream any more, he suddenly dropped to his knees and unfastened his slacks. He raped her while she screamed. Her screams seemed to excite him. The more she wailed, the harder at her he went. At the pinnacle of her screaming, the moments just before her voice cracked and went hoarse, he was thrusting at her so hard, it seemed as though he were trying to go through her and penetrate the floor.

Then, he saw Stephanie. With no more than a second’s worth of consideration, he walked over to her and got on his knees. With her arms and legs still shackled to the floor, spread wide, he had his way with her. As if it wasn’t disturbing enough to watch him rape a dead woman, I listened as he said my name over and over while doing it.

FINAL THOUGHTS on HELD Kimberly A Bettes

The way Kimberly A. Bettes wrote HELD makes you feel like you don’t want to leave the house again. Ever.

She makes you wonder about every stranger you see.

She makes you feel real and absolute fear.

And you keep going back for more.

I could not put this book down. It was so disturbing and one of the most realistic feeling books I have ever read.
